The Meaning of Sustainable Development

In April 2016, launched Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 which is an ambitious development plan that seeks to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals ( Arab Development Portal, 2018).
The Brundtland Commission (n.d.) describes sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".
The Sustainable Development Agenda is a global, human rights-based transformation agenda, which is not just elements of review, but a comprehensive approach to dealing with and solving problems (Unssc, 2017).
pillars of Sustainable Development
The term sustainability is widely used to refer to initiatives and events that focus on maintaining a particular resource. The concept of sustainability is divided into three interrelated areas: social, economic, and environmental, known as the four pillars of sustainability.
Figure 3: Pillars of Sustainable Development |
- Social pillar
Social sustainability aims to preserve and improve the human being in society in terms of health, education, access to services, nutrition, welfare, and other programs considered under the umbrella of human sustainability (Allen, 2021).
- Economic pillar
Since social sustainability focuses on improving social equality, economic sustainability aims at improving the standard of living. In a business context, the effective use of assets to maintain the company's profitability over time (Allen, 2021).
- Environmental pillar
Environmental
sustainability aims to improve nature (land, air, water, minerals, etc.) by
protecting it from short-term or long-term damage (Allen, 2021).
Therefore,
sustainable development is considered a plan of action for the rights of
people, the economy, the environment,
and social, to be achieved through peace in the presence of partnership. The partnership
enhances the capabilities of stakeholders to work with each other, and peace is
necessary to make improvements in the economy, environment,
and social.
Example of a sustainable development practice
- green areas
Green
spaces such as parks, wetlands, and forests are an essential part of developed
regions because they help cool cities, produce oxygen, and remove and renew air
pollution. Green spaces also play an important role in providing safer ways for
those who commute on foot or by bike as well as stimulating physical activity
and recreation (Davis, 2016).
